AUBURN — Defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson spent part of Monday installing the dime package. Unlike traditional dimes which usually put additional corners on the inside receivers, Johnson prefers to have two “Star” safeties on the field, so Justin Garrett and Robenson Therezie were on the first unit.
“We did not get too much of that in the spring so that was very important,” Johnson said. “We have probably overloaded the kids at this point but there’s just no way around it. A lot of times when the defense can’t hit without pads, one thing you like to do is really put your focus on install. Once you get the pads you go back to fundamentals. We’ll slow down a little with that part on the mental overload and hopefully kids will start to polish things up.”
