AUBURN — The new Auburn starting quarterback should be named by Monday. Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said he wants to decide the winner of the head-to-head battle between Nick Marshall and Jeremy Johnson in the next few days.
“It could be (Friday), it could be the next day, Saturday or Sunday, any time before next Monday would be really good for us,” Malzahn said following Thursday’s morning practice. “But like I’ve said before, we’re not for sure.”
Auburn held its final two-a-day practice of fall camp on Thursday and have practiced 16 times in fall camp. A decision following Saturday’s scrimmage, the fourth of fall camp, would leave around 10 practices for the starter to work extensively with the first team before the Aug. 31 season opener with Washington State.
“You want as much as possible,” Malzahn said. “Ideally, it would have been a week ago and you get three weeks, but the earlier the better.”
